چکیده

The X-ray spectra of accreting stellar-mass black hole systems exhibit spectral features due to reflection, especially broad iron Kα emission lines. We investigate the reflection by the accretion disc that can be expected in the high/soft state of such a system. First, we perform a self-consistent calculation of the reflection that results from illumination of a hot, inner portion of the disc with its atmosphere in hydrostatic equilibrium. Then we present reflection spectra for a range of illumination strengths and disc temperatures under the assumption of a constant-density atmosphere. Reflection by a hot accretion disc differs in important ways from that of a much cooler disc, such as that expected in an active galactic nucleus.

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

X-rays and Soft Gamma-rays from Seyferts, Radio Galaxies, and Black-Hole Binaries

Selected topics dealing with X-ray/soft γ-ray emission from accreting black-hole sources are reviewed. The shape of soft γ-ray spectra of Seyferts observed by OSSE can be well modeled by thermal Comptonization. A very strong correlation between the X-ray slope and the strength of Compton reflection in these sources can then be explained by thermal Comptonization in vicinity of the reflecting co...

Advection-Dominated Models of Luminous Accreting Black Holes

It has been found that a class of optically-thin two-temperature advection-dominated accretion solutions explains many observations of low-luminosity accreting black holes. Here it is shown that these models give a satisfactory description also of higher luminosity systems, provided the viscosity parameter is large. The models reproduce the spectra of black hole X-ray binaries in the Low State,...

Low Mass X-ray Binaries and Black Holes in Globular Clusters

Studies of nearby galaxies reveal that roughly half of their low mass X-ray binary (LMXB) populations are associated with globular clusters (GCs). We have established that the LMXB hosting frequency is correlated to various GC properties such as mass and metallicity. While the X-ray luminosities of a few of the brightest LMXBs in GCs are consistent with the accreting object being a black hole (...

Close Binary Interactions of Intermediate-mass Black Holes: Possible Ultra-luminous X-ray Sources?

While many observed ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULXs, LX ≥ 1039 erg s−1) could be extragalactic X-ray binaries (XRBs) emitting close to the Eddington limit, the highest-luminosity ULXs (LX > 3× 1039 erg s−1) exceed the isotropic Eddington luminosity for even high-stellar-mass accreting black hole XRBs. It has been suggested that these highest-luminosity ULXs may contain accreting intermediate...
